Peter Reddick Bursary Award 2020-2021

Unusual times call for unusual solutions and we are offering this award during an unpredictable and fluid time as we grapple with Covid-19 and its implications.

We have changed the parameters of this award and hope that they will inspire creative and unusual applications for this established and well respected award.

We are offering a bursary worth £2500 to a new graduate to support his or her practice in relief printing. We are particularly interested in graduates who are innovative and experimental whilst using the oldest of print techniques. The bursary is for 1 year and awards membership to the studio with full support, learning opportunities and professional development.

We are fully aware that many graduate opportunities have been withdrawn but we hope to make this an absorbing and flexible award.  Studio access could be curtailed at any point during the pandemic and to this end we are setting the parameters for online support/tutorials/CPD sessions and online work with laser cutting relief blocks so that much of this award can be achieved through this forum.

Should it be required, we will arrange with a suitable laser cutting community based company to be available to cut print samples which can then be proofed in the studio where possible to build up a sense of the final work.

We will pencil in a year end exhibition in real time.

This will be an intellectual and practical challenge but we will be able to support the candidate and we are flexible and adaptive in our approach.

We have adapted how our current awardee, Prerna Chandiramani, can continue with her work and we have taken the theme which was originally to be a VE Memorial interactive work at Spike Island Open Studios and transferred it to social media in the form of a collaboration project which has attracted interest from around the world.

We hope the successful candidate will have the ability address the uncertainties of the time by how they approach the work, manage the work and deliver a final exhibition in December 2021.

We ask graduates to propose something similar as part of their application and in this way it will  give them a focus for the first six months and time to develop their own work behind the scenes, whilst having a huge platform to promote their work.

The limits on creativity that a project demands have been useful to produce work as they are an immediate focus and help to block out some of the noise and anxiety.

Our past awardees have all stated that the opportunity to develop over the year is unrivalled, and the recognition by Spike Print Studio was a huge part aspect of their career development – a solo and the bursary are seen as significant on their CVs.
