5 Week Fall in Love with Relief Printing with Luke Wade

Tuesday 21 February- 21st March 2023

tutor Luke Wade

‘This five-week course is about exploring the joyful possibilities of the printed mark, not only for making prints but also for developing ideas throughout the rest of your creative practice. Printmaking is as much about intuition as it as about process. Luke will be guiding you through each step of the way and will support your creative freedom to push or pull together processes as you feel.

Relief printmaking is suitable for simple effective monochrome designs and single colours on contrasting paper. Areas of different colours can also be painted onto the block and printed simultaneously as in Chinese and Japanese art, while more complex images can be produced by printing successive layers of colour. This is achieved by either multi-block printing or by reduction printing, where a single block is cut away after each colour has been printed.

The aim of this course is not to make big pieces, but smaller works with lots of possibility for variation. Combining processes, proofing and layering will be encouraged, and plates will be made with readily available materials so that plate-making needn’t be confined to the studio.’
