CAPTURING MOVEMENT IN WOODCUT – 3 day workshop with Lisa Takahashi

How do you evoke a sense of movement in a woodcut image?

Drawing inspiration from the Grosvenor School and the Vorticists in particular, this workshop will focus on creating images that communicate a sense of motion. You will learn how drawing, collage and stencilling techniques can be used to develop compositional ideas. Once you have a design you’re happy with, you’ll be shown how to transfer your image to Japanese Shina plywood. Then, you’ll be guided through the cutting, inking and printing stages, and consider how certain cut marks, colour choices and ways of inking can help to enhance the visual impact of your idea. You’ll have the opportunity to see how using a Victorian printing press creates a different quality of print to the results achieved when printing by hand. By the end of the workshop, you will have made an exciting new 20 x 30 cm multi-block woodcut print and a head full of ideas of what you could print next!

Lisa Takahashi is a relief printmaker who works primarily with woodcut and linocut. She mainly works with the multi-block technique to create images full of movement. She has exhibited her work across the UK for the past 10 years, including at The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, The Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers Open Exhibition and The Mall Galleries, London. She has also appeared on Sky Arts Landscape Artist of The Year, reaching the semi-final in 2018.
