Paper, Process and Possibilities

A fascinating day of paper exploration and experimentation with master papermaker Elaine Cooper. This is a hands-on workshop investigating paper and its versatility as an art form. Develop new skills by exploring various Japanese paper art forms and discover a range of traditional techniques. Learn how to cut and transform paper into a thread, add textures for use as fabric or simply change its surface characteristic. Time to experiment with your own prints using ‘splice and paste’ a unique way to make a collage. Discarded or damaged prints can simply be rearranged by cutting out unwanted areas and rejoining the remaining pieces.

Expect the unexpected whilst focusing on process rather than a completion of a single artwork.

There will also be discussions on the historical and contextual elements of paper and how it played an important role in Japanese culture.

This course is suitable for both beginners and those with more experience.

All materials and supplementary papers provided, although it would be beneficial for you  to bring in your own discarded/unwanted prints, printed paper or any lightweight papers for testing.

Please bring a notebook, wear clothes and shoes suitable for a studio environment, and bring a bag or portfolio for taking work home.
