SUMMER SCHOOL – 4 day Wallpaper Design & Printing with Justyna Medon

Discover the secrets behind artisan, hand printed wallpapers in this 4 day course run by professional printmaker and surface decoration specialist Justyna Medon.
Justyna will introduce you to the techniques of placement design and four-way repeat pattern using both screen printing and block printing techniques.
You will experiment with colour to develop your own collection of patterns.
During this workshop you will:
DAY 1 REPEAT PATTERN DESIGN FOR WALLPAPER. Learn about the principles of transforming a drawing into a repeat pattern design. Learn how to use a design element, such as a mark, textures, line, shape or colour to create patterns and sample it through composition and rhythm. Prepare papers for printing samples.
DAY 2 and 3 REPEAT PATTERN DESIGN IN PRACTICE. Translate your design into a screen print and a block print to design your own wallpaper. Introduction to screen printing – learn how to coat, expose designs onto a screen, and print on a screen bed. Introduction to block printing – learn how to cut and to ink / print blocks. Produce sample wallpaper pieces
Day 4 PRODUCE A FINAL WALLPAPER 2m LENGTH
This workshop will allow you to gain technical knowledge and develop confidence in handling printmaking materials & equipment. It will give you the skills required to prepare design for print and work in professional printmaking studio. This course is taught at a professional level and is is suitable to creative thinkers and makers who have an interest in surface design and printmaking.
No previous experience is necessary.

Justyna Medon is a surface designer specialising in custom hand-printed collections of wall hangings, textiles and artefacts. After graduating from London College of Communication in 2010 Justyna’s focus was to share her passion for printmaking and to create illustrative patterns that tell the story. In her wallpaper dedicated research she explores historic prints, pigments and embossing technique. Justyna is interested in eco- substrates, natural pigments and explores green solutions in printmaking. She is passionate educator & researcher based in Wales, currently training in the field of wallpaper conservation.
