In this workshop series, spread across four sessions, you’ll dive into the exciting realm of lithographic printing techniques. Led by printmaker Fiona Hamilton, each session promises to be a delightful exploration of artistry and experimentation.

Discover the magic of transforming everyday household items into stunning works of art, all while minimising your environmental footprint! From unconventional materials  (such as tin foil & cola) to traditional processes, learn how to harness their potential to create intricate and visually captivating lithographic prints. Whether you’re an experienced artist or a curious beginner, our workshop caters to all skill levels, fostering a supportive and collaborative environment for everyone to thrive.

Throughout the workshop series, you’ll unlock the secrets of image transfer, plate preparation, multi colour registration and printing techniques. You’ll leave with skills and knowledge of this exciting art form to continue printing at home or in a studio, as well as a collection of prints made in the workshop.

The course will include:

  • an introduction to lithography including a brief historical overview and explanation of repulsion and attraction of ink and water.
  • constructing plates from tin foil.
  • mark making – experimenting with a range of media to create a variety of line, texture and tone.
  • processing the plate – with cola.
  • learning how to roll out the ink and use a damp sponge to wet the plate, and roll up the image.
  • printing – learning how to print litho using a spoon at home or a press here at Spike Print Studio.
