£5

Tuesday 5th December

10am – 11.30am

Talk in Spike Print Studio

Fiona Hamilton – Soma Gallery

Have you ever wondered how to approach shops and galleries with your artwork and handmade products? In this talk Fiona Hamilton will demystify the dark art of selling.

Fiona has over 20 years’ experience in the retail gallery sector as both a curator-owner and as an artist. In this talk she will be discussing how to find and approach galleries, commission rates, marketing, product photography, displaying your work for sale, how to work out your prices and much more. She will also cover the more boring things an artist needs to know about like the different types of insurance, GDPR, and the importance of spreadsheets and record keeping.

This talk will offer you a structured plan on how best to approach shops and galleries, how to make you memorable to them, and how to make your work sell once you’re there.

Fiona Hamilton set up Soma Gallery in 2004, a specialist printmaking gallery and shop. She learned how to run a creative business from Sarah James MBE (Contemporary Craft Fair) when she managed her craft gallery, Made, prior to setting up her own business. Fiona has also worked for the Bath Fringe Festival, curated gallery spaces at Somerset House as part of Pick Me Up – Graphic Arts Festival and has concurrently worked as an artist selling her own work in numerous galleries and shops for over 20 years, as well as showing in art fairs including Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair and Wells Art Contemporary. Fiona has a BA in Graphic Fine Art from Canterbury and MA Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking from UWE. Fiona is an active member of Spike Print Studio.
