Rodney Harris Leverhulme Artist in Residence
The School of Earth Sciences is collaborating with Spike Island artist Rodney Harris to explore new and innovative ways of interpreting William Smith’s geological map.
“The artist in residence project in the School of Earth Sciences will focus on how a contemporary interpretation of Smith’s original geological map might be achieved. It will explore the potential for using geological materials as artistic media and develop novel approaches to representing geological landscapes, encouraging the exchange of ideas between sculptural practice, printmaking and earth sciences, leading to artworks. Workshops, exhibitions and talks within the University and with the local community will be programmed to communicate the significance of geological research and mapping across the wider community.” Rodney Harris
Rodney has been using Spike Print Studio to create a series of relief prints. Here is a glimpse of the process of one of his works, a Rock Jumper print made from Blue Lias, Red Marl and Gypsum.
