The studios

The project was to pair up 12 artists from the Lilas Print Studio, on the east side of Paris, with 12 artists from the Spike Print Studio, in Bristol.

How the project was set up

In January 2015, Catherine Volk invited 12 members of the Lilas Print Studio to collaborate with 12 artists from the Spike Print Studio. She then matched the 24 artists into pairs. In March, the pairs made contact. In June, several of the Bristol artists came for a long weekend to work with their pairs in the Lilas Print Studio. They tuned in and progressed surprisingly. The Lilas Print Studio became a creative beehive, each artist benefiting from the experiences of the other artists.

Objective

The objective of this project is to make artists meet in order to open up alternative ways of working, taking them out of their usual routine. While still pursuing their own creative process, the advantage of working in pairs is to lead them in an unexpected direction. No theme was given. The inspiration of each pair came from the combination of their personal themes and methods and also from the combination of their double – or even triple – cultural origins.

In order not to limit the scope of each collaboration, no deadline was given. Each pair pursues the project for as long as it wants. There will be an opportunity to see the project as it develops in October 2015. The pairs will present their work in progress during the exhibition « Ink », where 50 members of the Lilas Print Studio will hold a show at the “39/93” cultural space in Romainville, from the 9th to the 25th of October, 2015.
