During this book making evening course, the participants will have the opportunity to make a series of 4 singular binding structures that demonstrate innovative approaches to presenting the three dimensional, a diptych pairing and two non-linear narrative configurations.
Using a range of both traditional and less orthodox techniques, will enable the participants to gain a practical experience of bookmaking that will equip them with transferable skills, along with the development of a book making aesthetic that will encourage further independent book making investigation.
These classes are designed for participants with or without bookbinding experience.
The classes consist of a series of 4 singular binding structures that demonstrate innovative approaches to presenting the three dimensional, a diptych pairing and non-linear narrative configurations.
In class sessions 1 & 2, the Sculptural Softback Tower Book & the Architectural Concertina Hardback Binding are both structures that explore the book as a container of architectural space and sculptural forms.
The Dos-à-dos (back to back) pamphlet binding in class session 3, potentially pairs two narratives separately but both within one cover. The fabrication of a Three Section Hardback Quarter Binding in class sessions 4 & 5 enables the construction of a three section book that is bound using an exposed decorative spine sewing. This book structure has the flexibility and potential for the inclusion of varying page sequencing and the configurations required for non linear narrative content.

Guy Begbie MA
Guy Begbie is an inter-disciplinary book artist, bookbinder and printmaker based in Wales, UK. He has been teaching at various UK Universities as a lecturer and book arts co-ordinator since 1995. His professional arts background and teaching experience is multi-disciplinary.
His work has been acquired for the Artists’ Book Collection at The State Library of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia and the Manly Library Artists Book Collection, Manly, Sydney, Australia.
