1 Year Etching
1 year course with Martyn Grimmer
October 6th, 2020 – July 6th, 2021
1:30pm – 4:30pm
This course is designed for beginners, improvers, and professional artists requiring a thorough grounding in all aspects of the medium of etching and intaglio. Intaglio simply means the family of techniques that utilise a line cut into a plate/matrix, usually aluminium, zinc, copper, or steel.
You will be given concise introductions and practical guidance through a differing range of possibilities that etching offers – starting with basic techniques and advancing to the most sophisticated. These will begin with mono and dry point prints, to enable you to get used to basic mark making skills, and will also look at inking, plate handling and using the press to achieve the desired results in a professional manner.
The course provides a strong foundation of all the above methods allowing you to move on to etching copper plates in acid, using various forms of line, tone using aquatint and colour so that you begin to establish your own visual language. There will be the opportunity to work with photographic images, and to etch these into plates as well as utilise cutting edge techniques of photogravure.
Guest tutors will be invited to participate in areas where they excel, so that you can fully develop methods and ideas of working within your own favoured aspects of this medium.
