Monoprint Landscapes – 5 wk online course with Ruth Ander

Monoprinting is technically a very accessible form of printmaking. You only need ink or paint, a surface such as metal or plastic, then prints the marks from the surface on to paper to create a unique print. Monoprinting has a long history that can be traced back to the seventeenth century and was often a fringe activity for painters eager to explore different avenues.
William Blake was the one who started making use of monotypes as a medium, becoming one of the most important artists to work with monotypes. He painted with egg tempera onto a millboard which rendered a textural and granular quality of the prints which were sometimes retouched with pen and brush. There is further information on:

Week 1 

  • Inspiration- looking atRuth Ander’s works as well as other artists who monoprint landscapes such as Barbara Rae and Gail Mason.
  • Intro to monoprinting- basic techniques
  • Composition- thinking in layers, making composition drawings, using photos etc
  • Homework: trying out mono-printing, getting to know your materials and tools

 

Week 2

Warm-up exercise: Colour mixing

  • Starting landscape monoprints (starting at least 3, different papers) First layers with even prints of colour.  Ghost prints and making textures for collages

Week 3

  • Warm- up exercise- trying different tools for taking ink off the surface
  • Continuing work on your landscapes, adding layers, marks in the ink/paint and masking out

Week 4

  • Warm-up exercise- using different tools to ‘draw’ on .to the back of the paperContinuing work on the landscape prints, or starting new ones if they wish.  Exploring painterly, gestural marks and line work.
Week 5 
  • Finishing prints: adding drawn elements, cropping prints down, how to mount and frame.
  • Using discarded prints as collage.
The tech requirements:
  • A computer (PC or Mac) with an up-to-date operating system
  • Webcam and microphone
  • An up-to-date version of Chrome browser installed on your computer
