COVID-19 updates
Jan 2022
In response to the Government’s lifting of restrictions on 27 January 2022, we continue to be vigilant and are not introducing any further changes at this time. We recommend mask wearing, maintaining good hygiene and being respectful of each other’s space.
For additional safety we have installed Rensair air purifiers in both studios.

July 2021
On 19 July 2021, the Government relaxed remaining social restrictions. Your safety in the studio is of utmost importance as we continue to minimise risk and create a sense of safety and security for our staff, members and studio users.
Respectful social distancing and mandatory mask and PPE use remain in place. Class sizes stay small at 5 for everyone’s wellbeing.
Mask wearing remains mandatory throughout the Spike Island building.
We are ready for action and look forward to seeing you in our beautiful studio very soon.
April 2021
As we begin to come out of lockdown we are pleased to say that our Learning Programme starts on 19 April and there is a good choice of workshops and courses available throughout the summer.
We continue to maintain social distancing and mandatory mask and PPE use in the studio. Class sizes remain small for everyone’s wellbeing. Mask wearing is also mandatory throughout the Spike Island building.
All member categories can now use the studio through our booking system. We are looking forward to seeing you in our studio that is ready for action!
January 2021
Lockdown 3
Following latest directive from the Government on 4 January 2021 we will close the studio to all members, students and the public from today Tuesday 5 January 2021 for 6 weeks in order to protect everyone’s health and wellbeing. The rapid and escalating rise in Covid-19 cases is a huge concern and we hope that you all stay as well as possible. We all look forward to a rapid roll out of the vaccine.
November 2020
Lockdown 2
Our Learning Programme will continue throughout November as we follow Government Guidance which this says is that all education should continue including adult and community learning. It should move online where possible, but can continue face to face, with proper precautions where not possible to be online.
We stress that this is subject to change at short notice depending on current circumstances.
Only keyholder members can access the studio to continue with their professional practice.
September 2020
We continue to make the studio as safe as possible and review our strategy regularly. Our members have started using the studio again during August and in September we will hold our final catch up classes for the 1 Year Portfolio students.
Artists and in particular printmakers, are familiar with PPEs but we are all adapting to such a high and continuing level of protection. It is great to see members working in the studio again.
Our Learning Programme starts again in October and we are ready to welcome new students who will be working in a new way with us as we develop our programme for the future.
You can read our re-entry strategy for the studio here.
August 2020
We have been making the studio as safe as possible over the last few weeks and our members have been able to use the studio since 10 August. Everything still feels alien to us and we have to adapt and change the rules as we find out what works and what doesn’t. But we are very happy to see a few people printing their own work. Our 1 Year Portfolio students from the last academic year will work in the studio during September to have some catch up classes to finish their year. Our booking system is up and running and our learning portal is developing in a rich and satisfying way. This is the future.
July 2020
Our staff team will be preparing the studio this month for a safe return for members in August and students in October. Understandably, these dates remain fluid and are subject to change depending on how the Covid-19 pandemic continues.
May 2020
During the autumn term we are limiting each class and workshop to 4 students to keep everyone as safe as possible. The 1 year courses will run with 8 students in split groups over that autumn term.
April 2020
We hope you and your loved ones are all keeping well during this uncertain and protracted isolation. We have put together the 2020-2021 Learning Programme and have uploaded courses for you to view. We are in the process of uploading all the remaining information.
We will accommodate our students who have missed out on their sessions in September – all being well.
Our tutors are working online with their one year groups and one of the groups does remote yoga together before the session!
We will have an online resource page soon which can direct you to resources, videos, interesting information so that we all stay connected – please follow us on social media.
If you have any queries regarding the new programme, please contact us.
We know that art feeds the soul and is good for our wellbeing and we hope to be able to welcome you back into the studio in the not too distant future.
From all of us at Spike Print Studio – we wish you well.
Temporary Studio Closure Coronavirus 17 March 2020
In the light of the latest directive from the Government and Public Health England we have taken the decision to close the studio to all members, students and the public from today 17 March 2020 in order to protect their health and wellbeing.
We will update the site regularly and will let you know as soon as we can open again. In the meantime our Learning Programme will soon be online on our newly revamped website. Please check for updates as we hope to start the summer programme in June.
Whilst our studio is closed, our small, dedicated staff team will be working from home and sharing our ideas and future projects with you. You can continue to email us with any queries and we will pick them up as soon as we can.
Exhibitions, events and other activities will be updated as soon as we are all through this incredibly difficult and unknown time for everyone.
We are grateful for all the support we have received over the years from everyone who has used the studio, been involved in its activities and all those who love print and the art of printmaking – thank you.
We wish you all and your families the very best and that you should stay safe.
Best wishes
Spike Print Studio staff and tutors.
